Optimal Maternal Positioning (OMP) for Professionals

DAY 1 — FOUNDATIONS

A practical, evidence-informed approach to understanding maternal alignment, pelvic mobility and fetal positioning.

Understand the WHY behind positioning and movement

Optimal Maternal Positioning (OMP) goes beyond learning a collection of positions or techniques.

It gives you a framework for understanding how maternal alignment, pelvic mobility and fetal positioning interact throughout pregnancy and birth and how creating space within the maternal pelvis can support the baby's cardinal movements.

During this highly practical one-day workshop, you will explore the foundations of OMP and learn how to recognise patterns within the maternal body and apply OMP principles appropriately within your professional scope of practice.

Who is Day 1 for?

Day 1 can be attended as a standalone workshop by professionals who work with pregnant and birthing families but **do not routinely attend labour and birth**.

This may include:

* Chiropractors
* Physiotherapists
* Osteopaths
* Massage therapists
* Bodyworkers
* Prenatal movement and fitness professionals
* Other professionals supporting women during pregnancy

If your work involves supporting clients during labour and birth, we strongly recommend completing the full 2-Day OMP for Professionals program, where Day 2 builds upon these foundations through applied practice, labour scenarios and integration.

What you'll learn in Day 1

The foundations of Optimal Maternal Positioning

Understand the principles behind OMP and how maternal alignment and mobility influence the space available within the pelvis.

Maternal alignment before mobility

Explore why OMP considers alignment before simply adding more movement and how identifying patterns of imbalance can change the way we approach positioning.

Understanding the maternal pelvis

Develop a clearer understanding of pelvic anatomy, movement and the different spaces available to the baby throughout the birth process.

Fetal positioning and the cardinal movements

Explore how the baby's position and movements relate to the maternal pelvis and why different stages of descent may require different approaches.

Creating space rather than prescribing positions

Move beyond memorising “birth positions” and begin understanding why, when and how particular movements or positions may create space.

Hands-on OMP techniques

Practise OMP techniques and positioning principles that can be incorporated appropriately into your existing professional practice.

More than a collection of techniques

One of the most important shifts within OMP is moving away from:

“Which position should I use?”

towards

“What is happening within the maternal body, where does the baby need space, and what might support that?”

That distinction is at the heart of Optimal Maternal Positioning.

Rather than relying on protocols or predetermined sequences, OMP helps professionals develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between the mother, her pelvis and her baby.

“The OMP workshop was outstanding. I learnt so much and feel better equipped to support women in my care.”

“We have focused on optimal fetal positioning for decades. OMP brings the missing piece — starting with the mother. This is essential knowledge for birth workers.”
— Vicki, Doula & Childbirth Educator

“The concepts sound simple — but the impact is profound. The hands-on demonstrations, particularly the deconstructed pelvis, make everything click. I value the ongoing support and follow-up.”
